World Cup fever

So it’s finally here, one of the biggest event productions in the world. Whatever our allegiances – and whether we love or hate football - there’s no doubt that the World Cup taps into the very essence of national pride….as long as your team is doing well, that is. And as we all spend so many hours at work these days, it affects the work environment too. According to recent research, employers who provide television access at work could avoid the problem of absences and actually benefit from improved employee relations and boost morale by helping their staff enjoy the World Cup. And over in Ireland, they’ve gone one better. LAN Communications, an Eircom subsidiary, has announced a technology contract for Citibank that allows its 1,200 employees to tune into regular live or pre-recorded video broadcasts, including the World Cup games, from their desktops. Suddenly, the PC has become the saviour, not only of business, but of World Cup enthusiasts. But not all employers have this enlightened view. According to workplace issues expert Croner, absence management always features high on employers' lists of concerns around major spectator events like the World Cup. They advise that rather than worry about employees being struck down with World Cup-itis on match days, they should be thinking of how temporarily relaxing the rules can have positive returns for their business. And for those of you who think that you could do a better job of producing an event such as the World Cup, check out our latest event management vacancies at www.regananddean.com/vacancies.php or e-mail events@regananddean.co.uk

Office support – looking to a brighter future?

Technology and changing workplace practices are having a real impact in the office support sector – but is this good news or bad news? Will technological advances, for instance result in redundancies – or will they enhance your value by allowing you to up skill? How it affects your chances is really down to you. Keeping up with technology is going to become more and more important. There’s an increasing trend towards virtual working for instance – and the fact that colleagues can talk to each other from any part of the globe means that skills in areas such as web and video conferencing are becoming increasingly important – particularly in the marketing, creative and events sectors. Additionally, increasing globalisation means that being able to understand the needs, aims and motivations of a customer base that spans the world is absolutely key. Customer bases are no longer local, traditional and predictable and consequently diversity has become top of the agenda as businesses realise that having a workforce that mirrors the diversity of their customer base is key. Demand for language skills and an understanding of cultural differences is, consequently becoming more desirable. Marketing comes of age at Regan & Dean

Peter Drucker, the management guru was the first to urge business leaders to take marketing seriously. “It’s not just a fancy form of salesmanship”, he said “but one of the most important company functions”. We agree – which is why, as we reported in our last issue, we have established a specific marketing division. It is run by Jo Hutcheson who as well as having several years experience with Regan & Dean also has an account management background in marketing and promotions. Today there’s a whole new economy requiring a whole new range of marketing skills such as experiential marketing, brand building, on line marketing and customer relationship management. There’s no doubt that marketing has really come of age and is now seen as a key driver of business strategy and growth. Markets and media have become more sophisticated. The power of brands has grown. So too have the means by which producers and providers can create awareness. Marketing is now a global activity and customer focus is critical in a world no longer marked by a shortage of goods but by a shortage of customers. Skill shortages in the hotspot areas of brand, digital and experiential marketing means that there has never been a better time to widen your skill sets. From follower to leader – the transition to management

Recent research in the US has found that leadership skills are a key driver of the jobs market. It’s a key skill but if your company doesn’t have a strong management training structure and you’ve found yourself in your first management role, what can you do to further your experience and make that transition as smooth as possible. Here’s Regan & Dean’s top tips for first time managers:

  • Accept that you will still have lots to learn. Be prepared to learn from others – including your new team.
  • Communicate clearly. Always keep your team fully informed of project goals, priorities and those all important deadlines.
  • Set a good example. Demand from yourself the same level of professionalism, and dedication that you would expect from others.
  • Encourage feedback and don’t be afraid to ask for support. Sometimes employees are unwilling to speak up about certain issues unless prompted.
  • Offer recognition. By publicly recognising the efforts and achievements of your team you not only build up their confidence but also encourage future contributions and effort.
  • Be decisive. A quality leader needs to make decisions and stick to them.
  • Help your team see the ‘big picture’. Take time out to explain to your team how their assignments and projects fit into the company’s larger goals.
  • Create an environment of constant learning and development – and include yourself in this process.
  • Provide professional guidance. A good manager – and leader - will also be a mentor so make yourself available to staff members and show interest in their career development within the company.
  • Use your own line manager for support and feedback rather than trying to do everything on your own.
  • Be patient with yourself. Developing strong managerial skills takes time – especially as you adjust to your new position.

Breaking up is hard to do…

The issue of resignations and changing direction has been hot news recently - particularly in Government circles where scandals and sleaze has led to resignations and re-shuffles. While your own reasons for wanting a change of direction may not be quite as colourful, making the decision to leave and resigning in a professional manner is not always an easy process. Here are Regan & Dean’s top tips to ensure that breaking up isn’t so hard to do:

  • Pick your moment and be positive! The morning of an important presentation isn’t great timing.
  • Don’t include personal remarks in a resignation letter.
  • A hand written note to your boss thanking him or her for understanding your position and offering to be available by phone for a couple of weeks can go a long way to softening the blow.
  • You must be prepared to actually leave. Don’t use the resignation as a threat to try and get more money, benefits, or a promotion.
  • Don’t be tempted to tell people what you really think of them.
  • Give at least the notice that you are obliged to give.
  • Don’t leave projects unfinished and agree handover periods so that the company is not disrupted by your departure.
  • So there’s no question about what belongs to you, prepare by removing all personal items and files from your office and computer.
  • Take the time to speak with your colleagues – and make positive comments about your time at the company.
  • Don’t let counter offers cloud your reasons for wanting to move – moving roles is rarely just about financial reward.
  • And finally….don’t jump the gun. Never resign until you have a solid job offer in writing.

For a more detailed guide to resigning professionally, and other career tips go to www.regananddean.co.uk/guides.php We’ll be covering dealing with counter offers in more detail in our next issue.
