Ten years in events careers!

Regan & Dean is celebrating ten years in events careers this year and it's amazing how much has changed in the sector over the last decade. From a discipline, which was mainly about production and logistics, we are now seeing events as part of the mainstream marketing mix. Consequently, over the last ten years there has been an explosion in both the types of events being produced - and the sorts of companies that now have a slice of the action. Events are no longer the sole domain of specialist agencies but are now part of advertising and marketing agency service offerings and many of the major corporates now have in house event departments. Developments such as experiential marketing, the evolving use of technology and the increasingly sophisticated nature of the sector has meant that the profession itself is much more mainstream - universities are now offering degrees in event management - a development that would have been unheard of 10 years ago. People used to "fall" into events but it is now much more of an aspirational career choice. But it is still not an easy sector to get into - core skills and specific sector experience have become increasingly important - and using a specialist recruiter who really understands the events industry is essential.

New Year Career Resolutions - What are yours?

Well here we are in 2007 - a time for new year's resolutions - did you know that most people have broken theirs by the third week of January? How many have you broken so far? Here at Regan & Dean's office support division we have been putting our heads together to come up with some career new year resolutions:

  • Put exercise or other personal activities on top of your to do list. Regardless of your workload, make some time to do something that you enjoy. Why? Because you will be more productive during your working hours and you'll feel better.
  • Learn a new computer skill - technology is evolving all the time and learning a new skill will keep you ahead of the game in the career stakes.
  • Ask your manager for feedback - ask for a few concrete examples of things you are doing well and areas in which you could improve.
  • Assess what you like doing - make a list of all the projects you worked on during last year and identify ways of getting more of the same.
  • Undertake an honest assessment of your current role - pros, cons, likes and dislikes and decide whether to develop your role with your current employer - or explore other opportunities.

New kid in town

Whatever your level of experience or qualification, sooner or later you are going to be faced with the scenario of starting a new job and even if you're normally the most confident person in the world, it's always daunting to walk into that office on the first day and not know anyone. So how should you prepare?

Make sure you get an early night - I've heard some real gems during my recruitment career such as the young lady who, on the first morning of her induction course, was asked to do some reading in a conference room - an hour later she was found fast asleep!

In terms of your induction day, you are bound to be introduced to a lot of people - and even though it will seem like information overload try to look interested and listen to what they have to say. While it might be seen as a bit "swotty" to make notes while they are speaking it's worth scribbling down a few lines immediately afterwards so that next time you meet you can refer to something you know about them. It'll also help you remember names.

As a new hire, you are going to be at your most vulnerable in the first few weeks of a new position. A huge percentage of unsuccessful hires within probationary periods are due to people "not fitting in" no matter how good their work is. So how do you ensure that the welcome mat doesn't lead to the revolving door? First, don't underestimate the water cooler effect - get to know your peers, go for those Friday night drinks - have lunch with people. It's important in any new organisation to build a support network. Additionally, try and make a demonstrable "hit" in your first three months - cutting down the time it takes to get the management accounts out for example, so that you can show an immediate perceived value. Oh! - and offer to do the coffee run - always popular!

It's a bit like starting school; those early impressions, can really stick. And the stakes can be high. Failure to create the right impression during those all important first few months can mean a real uphill battle for the rest of your time in the job. By working hard at building credibility and securing some early wins you'll be laying a firm foundation for longer-term success.

No smoke without fire

The new regulations on smoking in public places are likely to have a big impact on the workplace and although the legislation doesn't come into force until July, legal opinion seems to suggest that companies should be making preparations now. From July 1 anyone wishing to smoke will have to do so outside the work premises which raises obvious issues of both company image and litter - so now could be as good a time as any to give up! According to employment law specialists at Glovers solicitors it makes sense for any employers who do not have a non smoking policy to adopt a consultative approach in order to ease employees into a non smoking environment before the legislation takes effect. Employers will also have to display statutory "no smoking allowed" signs and can be fined up to £1000 by environmental health officers for not doing so. If an employer fails to prevent smoking in a smoke free place, they risk a fine of up to £2500. Are you ready? ACAS gives some useful pointers for those who have no policy in place. http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=696

Costing the earth

According to a recent survey among marketing and PR professionals, going green and working towards carbon neutral status is a marketing must. Minimising the use of natural resources such as energy and paper - without compromising business efficiency - is a challenge we all face. The "carbon footprint" is a term with which we are all becoming increasingly familiar and we are seeing ethical values and corporate responsibility - and the ways that these values are marketed - having a major impact on recruitment and retention issues. According to web marketing company Webex, almost two thirds of British workers think it is important that the organisation they work for is environmentally friendly and a good corporate citizen, yet half say their employers are shirking this responsibility. The study also highlighted that although 63% of workers would be prepared to change their working habits in order to reduce their carbon footprint, there is a lack of understanding of the steps that need to be taken. The marketing department can take a definite lead in this by communicating the benefits of carbon neutrality to all the company's stakeholders - both internal and external. You only need to see the amount of positive publicity received by Marks & Spencer this month following Chief Executive Stuart Rose's public commitment to achieving carbon neutral status in the next five years. And it will do no harm to take the business case to the powers that be that some suppliers are chosen not only for their services, but also for their stance on corporate social responsibility. For information about becoming a low carbon business, log onto www.carbontrust.co.uk.
