What?...Another Newsletter?
It may seem strange to start the first edition of the Regan & Dean newsletter with an apology, but here it is anyway. We're going to try to supply you with useful information six times a year. On market trends and industry information; on career management tips and getting ahead of the game. And most definitely not all the tedious stuff about the decor in our head office or how our Christmas party went. However if you don't want to receive it, we're sorry to bother you. All you have to do is to hit the 'Unsubscribe' link at the end of this issue and that will be that. But we hope you'll try us out. Because, in a world overloaded with information, we think we'll be able to come up with items you'll find genuinely interesting and useful.

The Great Brain Drain
According to our recent snapshot survey of events professionals, many of you are leaving the agency world behind and moving into corporate roles, citing long hours and stress as the main reason. In-house departments have become very well-established in recent years and have opened up a whole new raft of career opportunities. By attracting some of the industry's most high profile people they've even created a perception that they're possibly even a better option than working in an agency. However is this a classic case of the 'grass is greener' mentality? We're pretty sure that in-house work can be just as stressful, pressurised and frustrating, as well as rewarding and satisfying, as anything you'll experience in the agency sector. What do you think? E-mail your comments to newsletter@regananddean.co.uk and we'll report back in the next issue
Love in the Office
Well! It is the Valentine's season! And according to recent research almost one in ten of us will find our future spouse at work. As we work longer hours, and socialise with work colleagues, our chances of meeting that special someone somewhere else go into decline. That's why it's increasingly likely that we'll meet our partners at work rather than in a bar or a club. Take the example of Zoe Smart who was over the moon when Regan & Dean placed her at TNS Media Intelligence as Business Development Manager. But little did she know that they had also introduced her to her future husband. "When I went for my interview I was interviewed by Dean Wading, the deputy MD and Jon Green, my now line manager. Even then it was pretty much love at first sight. Thankfully though Dean left the recruitment decision to Jon. It didn't affect my work but there's a bit of pressure for me to be a bit more squeaky clean than colleagues and I'm conscious of anyone thinking that I get special treatment so I'm careful about timekeeping and my workload. I was a bit concerned that my colleagues might behave differently towards me but after a couple of days of announcing our engagement, everyone just got on with it. I'm aware that some of the office gags about the management may not filter down to me but generally I don't feel excluded at all. My advice would be if you are interested in someone and know it has potential then go for it! I spent most of my twenties as a singleton because I spent so much time working. In fact it was the only place any guy was going to get my attention. Now Dean and I are buying a house together and planning our wedding for early 2007 and I've never been happier." So take note all you lonely hearts - your next job could present you with more opportunities than just career development! For details of current vacancies visit : www.regananddean.com/vacancies.php
Brand Experience Comes of AgeIn a world where it is in increasingly difficult to target and connect with consumers, non-traditional ways of marketing are growing in importance. Consequently, Brand Experience has become big business in recent years with marketers shifting toward engaging consumers on a personal level by marketing their brand in a live environment. Ralph Lauren launched its new women's fragrance "Blue" by visiting shopping malls with their "Escapism" zone which was decked out as a luxurious spa, complete with palm trees and soothing music - inviting women for complimentary manicures and massages by Ralph Lauren Blue brand ambassadors whilst receiving postcards to take in-store to claim a free sample. This type of experiential marketing has become particularly prevalent in the youth market - young people can be more open to experiential or Brand Experience marketing that reaches them in clubs and festivals, for example. Consequently, the skill sets needed by events professionals are evolving. No longer is it enough to be a first class producer of the event itself - commercial acumen and a detailed understanding of the brand are vital ingredients. Additionally, an understanding of how marketing campaigns work - and how marketing and events production complement each other is vital. Robosec!
Need temporary help on your company's reception desk? One Japanese employment agency is suggesting you try recruiting a robot. For just under 50,000 Yen (240 Pounds) a month, a fraction of the cost of a human temp, the agency will despatch Hello Kitty Robo, a robotic receptionist capable of sensing a visitor's presence, greeting him or her and holding simple conversations. A spokeswoman for the agency said it would cost more than 300,000 Yen a month to employ a person for this type of work, but warned that the robots were not capable of doing everything human employees can do. We agree! In a world where even the most simple telephone call can bombard you with automated responses and a series of questions and options to try even the calmest person's patience, office support staff with the right mix of soft skills - skills such as interaction, patience, teamwork, resilience, tact and diplomacy - are in constantly high demand. Technology may be getting more sophisticated but we like to think that the human touch will be here for a good while yet! Network, Network, Network
Do you remember those halcyon days when generating new business leads was a simple question of being in the right place at the right time. No longer. Today's professionals need a whole new range of networking skills and need to cope with that horror of horrors - the 'networking event'. So, here to help you out is the Regan & Dean instant guide to getting the most out of business events: 1) Get a list - Before, or as soon as, you arrive get a list of attendees from the organiser so that you know who you need to track down and talk to. 2) Get an elevator pitch - A lovely Hollywood term derived from the idea that you should be able to sell an idea for a film in the time it takes a lift to travel a few floors. In your terms it means a fifteen second summation of who you are, what you do and how it can help a potential client. 3) Get a drink or some food, not both - Not as daft as it sounds - you'll need a hand free to shake hands. 4) Warm up - Just like an athlete, don't go in at the deep end. Find a small, easy to join group or an individual to talk to initially, then move on to your real targets. 5) Converse - Remember other people like to talk to rather than listen to a pre-prepared monologue. Try to find some common ground quickly, show interest and, above all, listen! 6) Get cards - And give them out too. 7) Agree to follow up - If you think you have developed a rapport, agree the next step - a call, an email, a meeting - then do it!
